Laudauto Si'

Wed, Oct 11

Guest Speaker: Prof. Matt Ashley

Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato Si', "On Care for Our Common Home," is arguably one of the most important papal encyclicals of modern times, and a historic, groundbreaking document in the literature of climate change. In this complicated, allusive text, Pope Francis speaks at once to the Catholic laity, to the clergy, and to the world at large, articulating a vigorous, humane argument for deeper spiritual and political engagement with environmental issues on the basis of wise stewardship, compassion, and what Pope Francis calls "integral ecology."

Goals

  • Compare and contrast prevailing political, economic, and scientific paradigms with the alternatives sketched by Pope Francis
  • Understand better the ideas of integral ecology and ecological conversion
  • Reflect on applications of the Pope’s encyclical letter in your own life
